It’s the dead of winter. The temperature is -30°C outside, snow is up to your elbows, and it’s a snow day at school. The kids walk into the room and say the words every parent dreads to hear: “I’m bored.” With a games room, that dastardly statement can be scrubbed from their vocabulary. A games room is a place for kids to let loose without unleashing destruction on the rest of the house. Plus, with their permission of course, it’s a great space for adults to kick back and watch the Super Bowl or shoot some pool. Creating a great environment to play in all comes down to the design and layout. With that in mind, here are some suggestions to help create a games room that your kids (and you) will truly love.
Consider Location and Sound
If you’re debating between two different locations to start putting together a games room – maybe it’s the basement, maybe it’s the spare bedroom – it’s important to take the time to consider what will make the most sense for the family. Booming surround sound next to the nursery? Maybe not the best idea. But if your basement is dank and musty, maybe above ground is the better option. Most people place the games room in the basement, but it depends on the layout and functionality of your home.
Figure Out the Layout of Tech Gear and Electronics
Whether it’s a big screen, 9 channel speakers, or a gaming system setup, these should be your next elements to think about when getting started with the design. You’ll need to have all of the correct outlets installed and cables well hidden to make your layout possible without a tangle of cords and cables. Don’t forget plugs for your neon bar signs!
Bigger Items and Games
Once the tech gear and electronics have been planned out, give some thought to the bigger, bulkier items and games, such as a pool table, foosball table, air hockey table, ping pong table and whatever else you may consider adding to complete the games room. You need to ensure there is enough space to manoeuvre around, like with the pool table. For instance, you generally need at least five feet clearance around a pool table to be able to use the cue properly from any angle.
Providing Durable Furniture
If you’re thinking of going with sleek, fancy furniture, just be sure that whatever you choose will be both comfortable and durable. It’s no surprise how rowdy kids can be, especially when it’s time to play. Always keep this in mind when deciding on what furniture you’re planning on including in your setup.
Make it Fun
The games room is all about being able to let loose and have fun, so try to incorporate that into the design. Kids love colourful, exciting designs, so get creative and have some fun with it!
