You come home from a long day at work, you put your feet up, sit back and relax. Except your mind starts to swarm with thoughts about that annoying client, that jerk who cut you off in traffic, or an upcoming presentation that’s got you stressing. If your usual relaxation routines aren’t cutting it, it may be time to upgrade to hot tub meditation. Crank up the heat, get those jets bubbling, and watch your worries disappear:
Create a Relaxing Ambiance
First and foremost, you’ve got the set the mood. Engage all five senses and create a calming and relaxing ambiance. Spa-safe fragrances are a must to create that full sensory experience. Lavender is known for its relaxing qualities, but sandalwood, eucalyptus, lemon, rose oil, and vanilla are also popular choices. Check out the selection of hot tub fragrances or try a sampler pack from Purewater!
Music is also a great way to help your mind stay focused and in the moment. Instrumental music and nature sounds (rainfall, ocean sounds etc.) work best, or just load up a pre-selected meditation playlist on Spotify. Many spas feature integrated Bluetooth sound systems that allow you to leave the iPhone inside, away from the elements. Alternately, invest in good quality outdoor Bluetooth speakers.
Relaxing mood lighting can help as well. Some folks prefer to keep things dark and stargaze; if that relaxes you, go for it! Many spas feature integrated digital lighting; find a tranquil soothing colour that puts you in the mood!
Get Comfy
Set the temperature of the hot tub to a comfortable level. Get in and find the most comfortable sitting position. The point is to try and ensure you won’t be fidgeting around and lose focus.
Focus and Breathe
Finally, close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Breathe deeply and feel the sensation of the breath entering your lungs and the sensation of exhalation. Focus your mind on the soothing nature of the water and the scents and sounds that envelope you. If thoughts do enter your mind, just observe them and let them drift away. Return your focus to the rhythm of your breath.
Don’t get discouraged or frustrated if you struggle to keeps your thoughts at bay. For those new to meditation, it takes time and a little bit of practice and effort to train your mind to really focus and clear out those distractions. You may find it helpful to chant a mantra, which is simply a word or phrase repeated in meditation. You can make up a mantra of your own, or find inspiration from tried and true meditation mantras.
Meditation can be practiced just about anywhere, but a hot tub, a place that already promotes relaxation and calmness, is the ideal environment. For beginners of meditation, this is especially helpful for learning how to focus and achieve pure relaxation. If you have yet to try out this in your hot tub, clear your schedule and make it a priority tonight.
